A history teacher accidentally uncovered a secret about two of her students when setting them a homework task to bring in a photo of a member of their family.

A teacher turned two of her students’ lives upside down after accidentally uncovering a secret about their family.

For a history lesson, the teacher asked students whether any of their family members served in World War I – and to bring in a photograph of them if so. But she wasn’t at all expecting this simple request to transform two of her students’ lives.

Responding to the Reddit thread ‘What’s the biggest plot twist you’ve seen in real life?’, one user said: “In primary school We had a WWI memorial lesson and we were asked if anyone had any relatives who fought at the time.

“My friend brought in a picture of his great great grandfather with his wife. A girl also brought in a picture of her great great grandfather with his wife. The teacher said they looked similar. She put them side by side and looked shocked.”

As classmates’ curiosity piqued, they gathered around to see the images, only to realise. “It was the same man who had kept his two wives a secret. Both had been married privately. They were cousins and didn’t know.”

Reddit users were astounded by this revelation, with comments ranging from “and he almost got away with it! ” to “a secret for almost a hundred years.”

Another user chimed in with a theory: “Any possibility of the great great grandfather being an identical twin?”

This speculation arose after a different user unearthed a shocking family secret following their grandad’s passing. They recounted how their grandad, who suffered from dementia and often lost grip on reality during his last year, would see a mysterious man wandering around his home at night.

Despite telling his family, they dismissed it as a symptom of his condition and subsequently moved him into a care home.

However, when an unfamiliar man attended his funeral, the family’s skepticism was piqued. The post detailed: “Fast forward to my grandfather’s funeral and a man showed up that wasn’t known by more than a few people in the family. Turns out he was an old friend of my grandmother’s who showed up to give his support. In a small town like that it wasn’t exactly an unusual thing to have random people show up to the funeral home who knew the person at some point.”
