Denise L. Doyle
Her first visit to Gettysburg as a young child in the 1960’s sparked her immersion in the Civil War, and although it remains a passion, her military interest has expanded over the years, most notably in ongoing research of her USAAC fighter pilot ACE uncle’s service in WWII. Her desire to engage and educate both students and visitors alike to the causes and consequences relevant in the 21st century that resulted from the Battle of Gettysburg continued through her nonprofit work with the Friends of the National Parks at Gettysburg (FNPG) and the Seminary Ridge Historic Preservation Foundation (SRHPF).
While Chief Administrative Officer and Membership and Finance Director at FNPG, on Nov 15, 2003, she initiated the First Annual FNPG Luminaria, an event that continues to honor over 3,500 soldiers every Remembrance Day evening at the Gettysburg Soldiers’ National Cemetery. She was also part of the initial team who devised and operated Gettysburg’s Rupp House History Center.
In September 2011, she took a position with the Seminary Ridge Historic Preservation Foundation, the organization who developed the creation of, and oversaw the restoration of, Schmucker Hall on the Gettysburg Lutheran Seminary campus, now United Lutheran Seminary. Serving as the Lutheran seminary’s main building prior to the battle, the building then known as Schmucker Hall was used as hospital by both sides during the 1863 civil war battle. On July 1, 2013, the rehabilitated building reopened to the public with four floors of exhibits and displays operating now as the Seminary Ridge Museum and Education Center.
Denise remains active in the Gettysburg community with present and former volunteer activities that include the Gettysburg National Military Park’s Park Watch program, the Adams County Historical Society Public Outreach Committee, the Seminary Ridge Battle of Gettysburg Anniversary Commemoration committee, the Gettysburg National Military Park Dedication Day Ceremony, the 2013 Steering Committee for Battle of Gettysburg 150th Commemoration, and Main Street Gettysburg’s Organizational Committee.
In addition to spending time with her family and traveling to historical sites across the country, Denise is a lifelong space geek who is always looking up.
