Australian defense attaché delivers keynote address at Kansas City event

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Veterans from all military branches and their families filled the National World War I Museum & Memorial’s auditorium Monday morning in honor of Veterans Day.

The museum’s ceremony featured music, speeches from city leaders and a keynote address from Australia’s defense attaché. It began, however, with the singing of both the American and Australian national anthems.

US-Australia alliance emphasized

America’s alliance with Australia was a major focus throughout the ceremony, with speakers noting how American and Australian troops fought together in both World Wars.

Rear Admiral Ian Murray, head of Australia’s defense and Australian defense attaché, delivered the keynote address to the crowd, detailing battles where troops from both countries fought side by side and highlighting the strong relationship between the two nations.

Murray, an Australian veteran with 40 years of service, said the ceremony held special meaning for him.

“I really respect the veterans that have come before, those who made the ultimate sacrifice of their lives in service of their country and those that serve today,” Murray said. “We also remember the families as well who have been left behind. So it’s just a really poignant occasion, one that I really value and honor being involved in here in Kansas City.”
