The World War I Memorial in Washington, DC commemorates those who served in the trenches and on the home front, celebrating a nation forever changed by the sacrifices they made and the ideals they bequeathed.
The Doughboy Foundation worked with the US WWI Centennial Commission and the National Park Service to make this Memorial a reality.
From initial concept in 2014, to the opening of the Memorial in 2021 with the landmark First Colors Ceremony, the Doughboy Foundation has been an integral part of the ambitious effort to successfully complete this long-overdue Memorial.

In the southeast corner, the Statue of General John J. Pershing stands flanked by maps and descriptions of the major battles of the war.
As the General looks to the west, he sees a representation of his soldiers cast in bronze by renowned sculptor Sabin Howard. When ‘A Soldier’s Journey’ is installed in 2024 it will become the largest freestanding high relief bronze in the western hemisphere. It tells the timeless tale of a soldier going to war, experiencing battle, and returning to his family.
This is the only memorial in Washington DC that includes space for the contemplation of peace. On the other side of the sculpture wall is the Peace Fountain, a waterfall flowing over “The Young Dead Soldiers Do Not Speak,” a poem by Archibald MacLeish.
Overlooking all is the Belvedere. It contains a series of panels on the history of the war, offers ways for visitors to access innovative World War I Memorial apps, and gives heartfelt credit to the generous donors who have helped make this vision a reality.

First Colors follows the path of an American flag that first flew over our nation’s capital on April 6, 2017, commemorating the Centennial Day that the United States went to war in 1917. This Commemorative Flag then flew over the American WWI battlefield cemeteries of Europe, honoring the 116,516 individuals who gave their all during the war. On this day, it returned home to its final destination in Washington, DC where it took its rightful place flying high in perpetuity above the national World War I Memorial.
