Please join us in welcoming WCC’s Minnie Named in honor of United States Army Signal Corps Operator Minnie Goldman Selig.
Minnie Goldman left a budding career as an attorney to serve as a “Hello Girl” – women who operated telephone switchboards for the Army Signal Corps during World War I. She first trained as an operator in Chicago and later Camp Dix in New Jersey.
In September of 1918, Minnie and other members of the Signal Corps Telephone Operators (Female) 6th Group sailed on the Olympic headed for England. She returned to the US in July of 1919.
Civilian women who served in the US Army Signal Corps as telephone operators in World War I were colloquially called the “Hello Girls.” From March 1918 to January 1920, the “Hello Girls” connected over 26 million calls, serving at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919 and the occupation of Germany. They swore Army oaths and wore Army uniforms, but when they returned home, the “Hello Girls” were denied Veteran status.
It wasn’t until Congress passed the 1977 GI Improvement Bill that the “Hello Girls” finally received recognition from the government for their service. When President Carter signed it into law, the Hello Girls were given discharges from the military and granted Veteran benefits.
It is with tremendous pride that we name WCC’s Minnie in honor of United States Army Signal Corps Operator Minnie Goldman Selig! #FurTheLoveOfVeterans #WCCsMinnie
