Christmas Truce

Christmas in the Trenches is a military re-enactment of the 1914 Christmas truce taking place 110 years ago during World War I.

Join us on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 10am for Christmas in the Trenches, a military re-enactment of the 1914 Christmas truce taking place 110 years ago during World War I, at the Midway Village Museum, 6799 Guilford Road, Rockford, IL

The soldiers in the Western front of the Great War called unofficial ceasefires during the week of Christmas. Enemies came together to decorate, exchange gifts, sing carols, and even play football.

The visitors experience is two-fold. Visitors will engage with re-enactors among the ambiance of a decorated replica trench measuring 150-yards on the museum grounds. Visitors will receive a special holiday trench tour, and hear excerpts from World War I letters from soldiers experiencing Christmas in the trenches.

In addition to the tour, visitors will view a narrated re-enactment of a battle and the cease fire, sing carols with the re-enactor soldiers, sip hot chocolate, view artifacts from World War I, and play football as the soldiers did during the truce! The 150-yard trench system is the only replica of its kind with built in bunkers.
