SUMMARY:National Donut Day World Donut Eating Championship at the National WWI Memorial
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate National Donut Day in Spectacular Fashion at the 2026 Salvation Army and Bakemark’s National Donut Day World Donut Eating Championship\nDonut fans\, fierce competitors\, and lovers of classic American traditions—join us June 5 at the National World War I Memorial in Washington\, D.C.\, for an unforgettable celebration. A beloved annual tradition\, The Salvation Army and BakeMark’s National Donut Day World Donut Eating Championship brings together history\, heart\, and high-stakes indulgence in a setting that honors a defining chapter of our nation’s story. \nA Legacy Worth Savoring:\nNational Donut Day began as a tribute to The Salvation Army “Donut Lassies\,” who delivered fresh donuts and a taste of home to American soldiers during World War I. As our country approaches its 250th anniversary\, this gathering takes on added meaning—honoring generations of service\, compassion\, and resilience that continue to define the American spirit. \nHistory\nIn 1938\, the first-ever National Donut Day was celebrated in Chicago\, and the history of The Salvation Army’s Donut Lassies was officially immortalized. In 1917\, these women were sent to France to establish field bases near the front lines. In makeshift huts\, thousands of soldiers would come to stock up on essential goods and grab a sweet treat baked by the Lassies. \nBoth the presence of these courageous women and the donuts that tasted of home brought a light of hope and happiness to the battlefield — a much-needed morale boost for languishing soldiers. In fact\, the Donut Lassies are also credited with popularizing the donut in the United States after the troops (commonly known as “doughboys”) came back from fighting in Europe. And still today\, over a hundred years later\, The Salvation Army continues to serve on the front lines through a wide range of social services for the most vulnerable individuals and families living in the United States. Over a hundred years later\, National Donut Day remains a time to reflect on the Donut Lassies’ selfless acts of service and a time to recognize veterans’ bravery and sacrifice.(history source: https://www.salvationarmyusa.org/national-donut-day) \nThe Champion Returns:\nLast year saw a thrilling title defense as James Webb powered through 64 donuts in eight minutes to successfully defend his crown. Now\, a new field of challengers is ready to test their limits. Will Webb rise once more\, or is this the year a new champion claims the spotlight? \nMore Than Just a Contest:\nPresented in partnership with BakeMark and The Salvation Army\, this event highlights a cherished American tradition while supporting vital community programs and recognizing those who serve others every day. \nSweet Stakes\, Serious Rewards:\nWith a $3\,000 total prize purse and $1\,500 awarded to the winner\, the competition is fierce and the incentives are real. Still\, for many competitors\, the greatest prize is being part of a meaningful and memorable tradition\, especially in a year that invites reflection on our shared history. Whether you’re competing for glory or cheering from the sidelines\, this event delivers more than excitement\, it offers connection\, purpose\, and celebration. Set against the powerful backdrop of the World War I Memorial\, and in the spirit of a nation marking 250 years\, every bite carries a deeper significance.  REGISTRATION FOR THE COMPETITION HAS CLOSED\, BUT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC TO COME AND BE A SPECTATOR. \nThe contest will take place at 11:00AM ET on Friday\, June 5th 2026\, at the National World War 1 Memorial\, located at 1449-1455 Pennsylvania Ave. NW\, Washington\, D.C 20004 \nBeing a spectator at this event is free and open to the public. \nSchedule of Events\n11:00 am – Donut eating contest begins \nYour support for the Doughboy Foundation will help fund our mission in perpetuity\, inspiring future generations of visitors and forever honoring our World War I veterans and all U.S. servicemen and women.
